Description ADR Driver Initial Basic Training Course Description This mandatory 3-day Initial Basic Course is designed to provide drivers with the essential knowledge required to safely and legally transport dangerous goods in packages, drums, and IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) by road. This training is legally mandated by the United Nations under the ADR (Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) and supported by national legislation like The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Successful completion of the course prepares participants for the official assessment test. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Successfully pass the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) examinations required to obtain the ADR Driver Training Certificate. Understand and comply with National and International Dangerous Goods Regulations (ADR). Correctly identify, classify, and understand the characteristics of various dangerous goods classes (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9). Apply correct procedures for packaging, marking, and labelling of vehicles and packages. Implement essential safety measures, including first aid, firefighting, and emergency procedures. Ensure proper load securing and segregation for dangerous goods. Course Content Day 1 – Sat 9th May 2026 Basic / Packages General requirements National and international dangerous goods regulation Dangerous wastes Allocation of UN Numbers Instructions in Writing Characteristics of class 2, 3, 4, 5 Day 2 – Sun 10th May 2026 Characteristics of classes 6, 8, 9 First Aid Emergencies Fire and Fire Extinguishers Package requirements UN packaging scheme Operational procedures Vehicle marking Day 3 – Sat 16th May 2026 Vehicle marking labelling and packaging. Packages UN package approval code Load Securing and load segregation. Tunnel code High consequence of dangerous goods Note on Tankers: Drivers requiring the ADR certificate for Road Tankers must attend a further 2-day Initial Tanker Specialisation Course after completing the Basic Course. Who Should Attend All professional drivers of heavy goods vehicles who are or will be involved in the transportation of dangerous goods in packages, drums, or IBCs by road. Any individual whose role requires an ADR Driver Training Certificate as a legal prerequisite. Pre-requisites for attending the course No specific training prerequisites are listed, but participants should be licensed to drive the relevant heavy goods vehicle and possess a good understanding of the English language. Course Assessment A formal assessment test(s) is administered by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). Drivers may attend the required examinations following a minimum 1-week interval after course completion. Course Certification Upon successful completion of the required examinations, the driver will be issued an ADR Driver Training Certificate. The ADR Driver Training Certificate is valid for 5 years. The certificate must be renewed before it expires by attending a Refresher Training Course and sitting another assessment test.
